Sonnet
Michael Mahler
Like a deer in the headlights, I stood there frozen,
She was still, yet I could see her panic,
Just a second ago so happy for the help I had given,
Now so dreary, I thought I was manic,
The right of her face hanged, as if it were being scraped off,
The Eyes, O’ the Eyes, so frantic,
The Nurse when I told her, she gave me a scoff,
“She’s stable, she’s fine,” she thought I was too dramatic,
Yet when she walked in the room, she knew I was right,
The patient, an old lady, left there helpless,
She a rushed into surgery, the doctors used all their might,
Though, they tried there best, she left the ICU Lifeless,
Those eyes will always haunt me,
My dreams and nightmares, I will never be free.
